MIA steadman
- MIA MYSELF & I -
As a practice I focus on self-reflection during personal mental health journeys and the relationship that has developed between my journeys and the excessive use of social media.
The digital age has brought a forefront of negative self-perception through constant exposure of fake perfection on social media platforms. The heavy use of filters and editing apps to push perfect ideals out into the world blurs the ability to recognise the real. It is my aim to push a raw and realistic image out there in protest to the negative body image culture that exists online by exposing my own demons in the journey of self-acceptance.
Conceptually I have been looking into the psychological aspects of body image and self-perception to gain a grasp on the effects of these topics and how my practice can fit into the dynamics. I have also been researching about the female image in art and how societal ideals have caused an evolution of representation of the female body. Looking particularly at the societal developments into skinny culture and the lengths that women are going to try and fit into these dangerous and damaging ideologies.
With this research I use mixed media to create my works as a documentation of my findings. Hoping to begin a process of self healing for me and for others.
